In a recent livestream, "Disciplined Entrepreneurship with MIT’s Bill Aulet", MIT Sloan Executive Education Senior Associate Dean Peter Hirst interviewed MIT Professor and serial entrepreneur Bill Aulet, who explained that entrepreneurship is a skill that can be taught. After shattering misconceptions about the practice, he told firsthand accounts of implementing entrepreneurial strategy. Aulet also explains how entrepreneurship can be used to solve some of the greatest challenges business leaders face today.
Many topics related to entrepreneurship were covered in the hour-long session, which can be viewed here.
Here’s a few key takeaways from the event:
- What is Disciplined Entrepreneurship? Disciplined Entrepreneurship is a systematic and rigorous 24 step process to build innovation-based ventures. Rather than invent new concepts, this method assembles the tools that have already established track records of success in practice from many different sources. It then integrates them together in an easy to access and prescriptive road map.
- Is intrapreneurship still a thing? Yes. When COVID-19 hit, if you had no entrepreneurs within your organizations (intrapreneurs) you got hit harder. Intrapreneurs are typically self-motivated, proactive, and action-oriented people who take initiative. However, an intrapreneur has access to the resources and capabilities of an established company – giving them an advantage while innovating.
- Engaging well with others is not just an internal affair, to start and scale a business you need to spend an enormous amount of time with customers, potential customers, competitors, and many other stakeholders.
- What is ‘antifragile entrepreneurship’? An entrepreneur who not only survives but thrives in uncertainty would be considered ‘antifragile’.
“Entrepreneurship, by the way we define it, is not profiteering,” Aulet says. “I would argue entrepreneurship is an ethical activity, and if you want to be a high-growth innovation-driven entrepreneur, what you do needs to be about more than just the money.”
