Dr. Timothy Berg is currently the Senior Manager of the Information Systems Group at Sandia National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. The group manages information systems and services for the California site and also provides classified and unclassified videoconferencing services to the laboratory as a whole. Previously, as Manager of the Advanced Networking Department at the Sandia New Mexico site, Timothy managed the deployment of the Network Revitalization Project, which received a Popular Science Grand Prize “Best of What’s New” Award for its largescale use of Gigabit Passive Optical Networking (GPON). Other responsibilities included architecting and troubleshooting Sandia Information Systems, as well as research in Quantum Computing, Quantum Communications, Cryptography, High Performance Computing, and Cybersecurity. From 2004 to 2009, he managed the Microsystems Partnerships department where work centered on the security of computer based systems and their constituent hardware, software, communications, and supply chain elements. The teams he led received several inventor awards. Joining Sandia first as a staff member in 1994 at the California site (Exploratory Systems), he moved in 2000 to New Mexico (Intelligent Systems & Robotics and Systems Assessments and Research). For a decade, he performed research and development and led projects in Nuclear and Biosensor Data Fusion, Virtual Reality, Self-Organizing Communications Systems, Microelectronics Manufacturing, Reverse Engineering, Vulnerability Assessments, and Software Protection. Timothy earned a B.S. from the University of Minnesota, an S.M. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a D.Phil. from Oxford University in the United Kingdom. He was a Fulbright Graduate Scholar at Lund University, Sweden and Visitor at the University of Melbourne, Australia. A lifelong learner, Timothy has completed Leadership Programs at Lockheed Martin, the MIT Sloan School of Management, the Sandia Laboratories Business School and the UCLA Technical Management Program. He is a member of IEEE, ACM, INCOSE, and ASME and holds two patents in Composite Materials. He was founding President of the New Mexico Chapter of the Fulbright Association and the Thunderbird Toastmasters at Sandia California.
