Course Overview
Copy LinkWhy attend Social Media Strategy?
By enabling us to both consume and share content with a simple tap of a screen, social media has empowered people, and organizations, to shape public opinion and drive action like never before. This has given companies the opportunity to enhance their consumer loyalty and engagement, but has also raised questions around the influence social media may have on our behavior.
The program draws on evidence-based, cross-disciplinary research from Sinan Aral’s latest book, The Hype Machine, which investigates the ways in which social media affects our decision making and shapes the world we live in. Guided by industry experts, this program moves from theory into strategic application, providing you with the tools and frameworks to navigate the perils of social media and leverage its promise within your organization. In addition, the course will teach you to enhance your digital marketing strategy using powerful techniques and a deep understanding of the science behind social media.

Study: ‘Weak ties’ make a difference in finding a job online
New research from MIT Sloan professorSinan Araland others shows the value of “weak ties” in job searches. The longstanding theory of “the strength of weak ties,” proposed by sociologist Mark Granovetter in 1973, suggests that acquaintances we know peripherally can have a more direct impact on us than closer friends.
Looking for a new job? Ask someone you barely know
Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard, Stanford, and LinkedIn conducted the largest-ever study on the impact of social media on the labor market, and have determined that “moderately weak” social ties are more beneficial than stronger connections for job seekers. A paper detailing their findings was published in Science on Thursday and illustrates how networking with people outside of your inner circle can lead to new employment opportunities.
3 insights about the digital economy from a new MIT podcast
Experts talk about the rise of TikTok, the power of social media, and why we should be cautious about artificial intelligence.
