The gap between the skillsets needed yesterday and those needed tomorrow is being widened by the ways in which algorithms, data, and transformative technologies are reshaping work and how we do it. In this new online program, you’ll learn how to harness the momentum and key principles of algorithms and transformative technologies to help bridge some of these gaps in your organization and to more successfully manage and lead your teams in the digital economy.

When we think about building the organizations, institutions, and society of the future, we invariably look to technology to lend a hand. Indeed, our visions of tomorrow are shaped by innovations delivered by algorithms currently powering many aspects of our life and work. To successfully lead organizations in the digital economy, we must upgrade the way we think about, communicate around, and act upon technology in our companies. Today’s organizations need more translators who can convert computer science to business value and who can help their teams share a common language across all business functions, both technical and non-technical.

Algorithmic Business Thinking is designed to help you understand and apply key concepts that lie at the heart of transformative technologies to your corporate and people strategies. Over the course of the six weeks, faculty will pull back the “curtain” to show you how algorithms and the technologies on which they are based are built, how they work, and how you can use them across your business. While this program will introduce some basic coding principles, this program is less about how to code and more about illuminating the building blocks of algorithms, so that you can re-use those same building blocks to create new business value.

You will walk away from this program with a practical playbook to help you and your teams apply Algorithmic Business Thinking in your organization wherever and whenever it’s useful.

"This program helps us to upgrade the way we think about, communicate around and act upon technology in our companies. We need more translators who can convert computer science to business value and can help us speak the same language across all business functions, both technical and non-technical.” - Paul McDonagh-Smith, Digital Capability Leader, MIT Sloan

Executive Education As a participant in this program, you will better understand:

  • The role that code, algorithms, and data play in our lives and society
  • How we can use the principles at the heart of disruptive technologies such as AI, ML, and robotics to future-proof organizations and turn disruption into opportunities for sustainable growth
  • The way your technology teams see the world as compared to how business leaders see it—and how to better connect the two How to avoid potential obstacles posed by new technologies
  • The need for becoming a technology “presentist” rather than futurist in your organization

  • Hands-on coding experience (no familiarity with coding required)
  • Practical examples of algorithmic business thinking in practice and their implications
  • Increased comfort with and vocabulary around computer science topics

PROGRAM EXPERIENCE

Algorithmic Business Thinking is delivered over seven weeks with the first week being an orientation week where you will be contacted by the MIT Sloan Executive Education team and introduced to the online learning platform and your personalized online learning and technical support team. During this week you will be able to explore and get familiar with your online platform before beginning your learning journey. You’ll have access to key dates and milestones for the program and receive all the information you need to be ready for when the program content modules begin.

Each module is released on a weekly basis (week one is an orientation to the program). This executive program combines interactive and engaging media such as videos, animations, polls and e-learning activities with program notes, readings and articles. There are opportunities for collaborative learning through discussion forums. Each week you will be asked to apply what you’ve learned to opportunities and challenges you face today in your teams and organizations.
Each module is broken down into thematic units that combine video lessons and engaging learning activities to consume content and practice applying it. In this program you will:

  • Spend 4-6 hours per module on learning related activities
  • Experience a broad range of digital content: video lessons, animations, live polls, discussion forums, assignments and application activities
  • Apply your weekly learnings and insights to your Algorithmic Business Thinking “Playbook” that you will take with you at the end of the program to use as a resource in your organization

Throughout the program you will be supported by your dedicated MIT Sloan Digital Learning Facilitator who will guide you through your program experience and be a contact point for any questions you may have.

Upon successful completion of your program you will a certificate of completion from the MIT Sloan School of Management. This program may also contribute toward MIT Sloan Executive Certificate requirements.

Algorithmic Business Thinking provides learners with a diverse and engaging learning experience built upon components including the following:

  • Access to MIT Sloan 4Dx Virtual Collaboration centre: We recognise the importance of networking with other learners and having access to faculty. We think it’s important to be able to collaborate around the key themes, content and context of the learning experience. With this in mind, all participants will be given access to MIT Sloan Executive Education’s always open tailored 4Dx Virutal Collaboration centre. Meet with your fellow learners, talk about the program, collaborate on your assignments or simply hang out and share ideas…
  • Live Townhall keynotes: During Orientation Module and Module 6, the Faculty Director will deliver live townhall sessions in MIT Sloan Executive Education’s 4Dx virtual collaboration centre. These sessions will be recorded and uploaded to the virtual world collaboration centre for participants to view and revisit during the program
  • Office Hours: On the Friday of Module 1,3 and 5 weeks, the Faculty Director, Paul McDonagh Smith, will be pleased to meet with you in his MIT Sloan 4Dx Virtual Collaboration Centre office, to discuss any questions or ideas you have with regard to the program content and experience.
  • Program Project: At the close of each content Module, you will be invited to complete and submit an assignment related to the key themes of that section of the program. These assignments will aggregate such that by the end of the program, you will have a workbook that you can take away from the program and use with your teams and communities
  • Module podcasts: At the end of each module you will be provided with access to a downloadable Podcast that summarizes the key ideas, insights and frameworks covered in that module. Each podcast will be 8-12 mins in length and fit together, such that by the end of the program you have a 50-60mins audio executive summary of the program
