Blair joined the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in July of 2005. His responsibilities and interests have been varied and include: globalization initiatives, strategic partnerships in laboratory medicine, corporate reorganization/management activities, mergers and acquisitions, and establishing the gold standard certification for individuals within the US and abroad. More recently, he has diligently begun working on a progressive educational model to lead ASCP into the future. The goal of this project is to meet the needs of all pathologists, laboratory professionals, and brands of the ASCP and to be a relevant education source for all practitioners.

His scientific research work is focused on cytopathology, molecular research, clinical trials, novel methods for determining the standard of care in cancer cytopathology, and improvement of laboratory administration. Funded as a principal investigator for 50 scientific research grants and over 100 scientific corporate contracts, Blair has published a number of significant research articles within the profession and is the primary author of several textbooks that are national and international best sellers. In addition, he is an active scientific lecturer and has given over 140 national and international speeches.

During his tenure at the Medical University of South Carolina, Blair served as the chief director for the Center for Cytopathology and Molecular Diagnostics. The Center was named as a founding "Center of Excellence" by the American Society of Cytopathology. This distinction placed the facility alongside Johns Hopkins University, Harvard University, and the University of Vermont.
