Ed Lewis presently holds the title of Principal Engineer at Canon Virginia, Inc., (CVI) the North American manufacturing arm and technical headquarters for Canon. Presently, Ed is working with the Business Development Engineering (BDE) group. In this role, Ed is providing guidance to senior and executive management on innovation strategy, helping identify and overcome organizational barriers to new innovation initiatives and helping to form and oversee a team within the BDE group that will research, identify, develop and obtain new technologies in sustainable materials. Ed works between business, technology and legal stakeholders on the company side and stakeholders in the broader innovation ecosystem, especially within startup companies and academia. In prior positions with CVI, Ed has served to move technologies from Japan to the United States, oversee process engineering for numerous manufacturing line startups and provided general process and product engineering support. Ed’s technical expertise with Canon has been in the areas of magnetic composite material processing, development, use and recycle as well as polyurethane elastomer casting; he has held roles in product engineering, materials engineering and research and development. Ed created and oversaw a materials analysis lab within CVI that continues to provide analytical, thermal, spectral, rheological and physical testing support to the operation. Ed has lead several major projects for CVI, including the development and implementation of a process to recycle polystyrene resin from post-consumer laser printer cartridges that resulted in all North American made laser printer cartridges having their cover parts all molded from 100% post consumer resin content. Ed has always strove to push capabilities of the company and others to achieve beyond expectation. The MIT / Sloan Executive Certificate experience in addition to many other MIT Professional Education courses have played a large part in helping Ed to remain ‘fresh’ through constant exposure to new ideas from the faculty and staff at MIT as well as many amazing fellow students. Ed is presently serving as the President of the Virginia Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers. Ed holds an Engineer’s Degree in Engineering Management from the George Washington University, a Master of Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Virginia and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the West Virginia University. When not working, Ed enjoys almost any activity that will place him in the ‘great outdoors.’
