Group Announcements:

We've changed the name of this group to match the new name of the program (formerly Managing Complex Product Development Projects). The new name is designed to reflect the fact that the program is no longer focused only on product development projects, but rather on all types of large-scale technical projects.

  • Rolf H.: Hi Venkata

It is surely useful for IT professionals. DSM analysis is already built into a lot of IT development tools like Sonar and Eclipse but the information provided is not used fully since most projects lack knowledge about what to do with it. I would also recommend the MIT Business Dynamics course for IT professionals working on larger projects as well as the High Velocity Organization and improving performance courses.

  • Rolf H.: Hi Enrique

I would imagine that you can put DSM knowledge into good use for large scale regional development programs since it helps your visualize dependecies and manage these better. It will not be a silver bullet for your need though - reason for me saying this is that I think you have a multifaceted challenge.

A strong recommendation is to take the MIT Business Dynamics course as a companion to this one. You will learn about systems thinking and system dynamics which is eminently applicable to sticky, multifaceted challenges like yours.

This said both courses will provide you with skills and tools to help you. DSM to visualize, manage complexity of the project planning and control. System Dynamics to understand and create programs that provide sustainable solutions and their interdependencies and resulting dynamics.

  • Enrique G.: Please indicate whether this program can help me to design and manage large scale regional development plans - which include economic, population, ecological, and many other social variables such as human rights, equality, gender. Complexity of social phenomena has always been an obstacle for economic & social devlopment planners and one of the reasons of our failure to address execution problems in the real world with success. Laearning to manage details would seem to be the key.? Would appreciate your response. Thanks Enrique Garcia-Ayaviri
