Campus map

How do I get to MIT Sloan?
MIT Sloan is located on the north shore of the Charles River Basin in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. It is adjacent to Cambridge’s Kendall Square. The campus is within 3 miles of two major interstate highways, less than 6 miles from a major international airport, and is accessible via public transportation. MIT Sloan is a 15-30 minute walk from downtown Boston (depending on the weather). MIT Sloan is a 30-40 minute walk from Harvard University (located just up the river from the MIT campus).

Via Public Transportation
MBTA ("The T") Subway — By train, take the Red Line to the Kendall/MIT Station. Once above ground (you will be on Main Street), head for the nearby Bank of America on the corner of Wadsworth Street. Walk half a block down Wadsworth Street toward the Charles River, then cross the street to a wide flight of stone steps — the MIT Sloan Plaza. The Hermann Building (which houses the MIT Sloan library and faculty offices; also known as E53) is straight ahead, and the main MIT Sloan building (E52) is on your right.

Bus — The CT2 (Cross Town) stops at the Kendall Square T Station, as well as on the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Vassar St., near the main MIT entrance. The #1 or Dudley/Harvard Station bus stops at the main MIT entrance on Massachusetts Avenue and provides transportation to Central Square and Harvard Square.

From Logan Airport
By taxi — Taxi fare from the airport is about $30-$35. During non-rush hour, the taxi ride will take about 15 minutes. During rush hour, the ride could take 30 minutes or more.

By subway — From any terminal at Logan Airport, take the Silver Line bus to South Station. At South Station, change to the Red Line subway to Kendall/MIT (inbound toward Alewife). Under normal conditions the ride will take about one-half hour and the fare is $1.70 (using the Charlie Card) or $2.00 (cash).

By car — Leaving the airport follow the signs to the Sumner Tunnel. Entering the tunnel keep in the right lane. At the end of the tunnel, keeping in the right lane, start down an incline and bear to the right immediately at the sign for Storrow Drive. Take Exit 26 for Cambridge/Somerville. Follow the Back Bay/Cambridge signs (do not take the exit for Cambridge/Somerville). Keep in the right lane and follow the Storrow Drive Westbound signs. After passing under the pedestrian walkbridges, change to the left lane and take Exit 2A-N. Turn right and cross the Harvard Bridge (Massachusetts Avenue). MIT’s main entrance, 77 Massachusetts Avenue, will be on the right at the second set of traffic lights. Take a right onto Vassar Street. Follow it into Kendall Square, which is adjacent to the MIT Sloan campus.

Driving
From the North (I-95 or I-93)
If you are heading south on I-93, follow I-93 into Boston then follow the I-93 instructions below. If you are heading south on I-95, take the I-93 South exit then follow the instructions from I-93. Alternatively, take the I-90 East exit from I-95 then follow the instructions from I-90.

From the South (I-95 or I-93)
If you are heading north on I-93, follow I-93 (the Southeast Expressway) into Boston then follow the I-93 instructions below. If you are heading north on I-95, take the I-93 North exit then follow the instructions from I-93. Alternatively, take the I-90 East exit from I-95 then follow the instructions from I-90.

From the West (I-90) (Mass Turnpike)
Follow I-90 east to the Cambridge/Brighton exit (exit 18). Following the signs to Cambridge, cross the River Street Bridge, and continue straight about 1 mile to Central Square. Turn right onto Massachusetts Avenue and follow Massachusetts Avenue for about a half mile. Take a left onto Vassar Street (before the main entrance to MIT). Follow it into Kendall Square, which is adjacent to the MIT Sloan campus.

From Route I-93
From I-93, take exit 26, and follow the signs to Back Bay along Storrow Drive West, approximately 1.5 miles, to the exit for Route 2A. The exit will be on the left, just before the Harvard Bridge (more appropriately called the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge). The Charles River will be on your right. As you cross the bridge, you will be looking at MIT — the Great Dome and academic facilities are on the right, the dormitories and athletic facilities are on the left. After you cross the bridge, continue on Massachusetts Avenue. The main entrance to MIT will be on your right. Take a right onto Vassar Street. Follow it into Kendall Square, which is adjacent to the MIT Sloan campus.

Where is the nearest international airport?

Logan International Airport is less than 6 miles away from the MIT Campus and is located at 1 Harborside Drive, East Boston, MA 02128.

What is the parking like?
Parking in Cambridge and Boston is generally not an enjoyable experience. Whenever possible, park your car at the hotel at which you are staying, and use public transportation to get to the MIT campus. If you must drive to the campus, there are both on- and off-street parking available. There are several commercial parking lots in Kendall Square, including a large indoor lot at the Marriott Hotel. If you are coming to campus, we highly recommend the use of public transportation and taxis.

What services are available for participants with disabilities?
Access to MIT: A Guide to Facilities for the Handicapped is a color-coded map of the MIT campus which features recommended routes for individuals with ambulatory disabilities, including the locations of curb cuts, ramps and accessible entrances to buildings on the MIT campus. A hard copy is available through MIT’s Information Center in Building 7, Room 121, (617) 253-4795.

More information can be found at the Disabilities Service Office.

International Participants

Will I need a visa?
Many Canadian citizens and many citizens from Visa Waiver Program countries can come to the U.S. without a visa if they meet certain requirements. Other foreign citizens will need a nonimmigrant visa. For more information about visa and passport requirements, visit the U.S. Department of State

Can you send me a visa invitation letter?
It is the participant's responsibility to understand and comply with the entry requirements for travel to the United States. Please note that some citizens are required to hold a Machine Readable Passport or visa in order to enter the United States. Visit the U.S. Department of State website, or contact your local embassy or consulate, to determine the requirements based on your country of origin. If you require a visa invitation letter, please contact the Program Registration Team at execed-registration@mit.edu as soon as possible after your full payment has been made and at least 10 days prior to the date you need to have the letter in hand.

Due to the recent increase in visa fraud, MIT will issue a visa invitation letter only after program acceptance and upon receipt of payment in full. In addition, $1,000 of your program payment will be considered a non-refundable deposit should you be unable to attend the program, regardless of cancellation/deferral date or reason. Within 42 days of the program start date, the standard cancellation and deferral fees also apply. Please see our Cancellation and Deferral policies for more information.

Can I wire international payments?
Absolutely. If you provide the wiring agency with your invoice number and obtain the bank transfer reference number this will facilitate the payment process.

Is the TOEFL test required?
MIT Sloan Executive Education does not require the TOEFL. Participants are required to be fluent in understanding, speaking, and reading English but no specific exam is required. Your experience and background is in line with that of a large number of our participants and you are welcome to register for the courses.

Are translators available at the programs?
MIT Sloan Executive Education does not provide translation services for its programs. Participants are required to be fluent in understanding, speaking, and reading English but no specific exam is required.

Are your programs offered online?
We currently offer one online program: Essential Law for Entrepreneurs in Innovation-Driven Startups and Growth Companies (4Dx) which will be delivered in our state-of-the art immersive virtual classroom, and will comprise six 2 hour live online sessions taking place once a week over six weeks. We hope to offer more in the future.

Will I receive a certificate at the end of the program?
All program participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the program.

Are the open enrollment programs graded or are tests given?
No. Grades are not conferred nor are tests given; participants receive a certificate of completion after attending each program.
What are program ratings and reviews?
For each open enrollment program, you can see ratings based on actual participants' feedback shared upon completing a program and once participants have had the time to start applying what they have learned in classrooms to real-world situations. Where can I see a list of programs I have completed?

Please log in or create your account. Once you are logged in and on your profile page, you can see a list of the programs you have completed and how close you are to earning an Executive Certificate.

How do I apply for a program?
Log in to the website and click on the Apply Now text in the upper right of the screen or on the program webpage, then follow the directions for application completion. We anticipate that it will take you approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete the application. Once you hit the Submit button, you will receive an e-mail confirming that you have successfully applied for a course. You can expect to hear back as to your acceptance within 7 to 10 business days. An acceptance package will include an invoice for the tuition fee, payable within 30 days or prior to the start of the program (whichever comes first), as well as hotel and other important information.

Please note: It is important to apply early if you are planning to pay by any means other than credit card since your enrollment is not guaranteed until payment is received. It can often take time to arrange payment with your organization. Also, payment is required before a visa can be issued.

All information given on applications will be treated as confidential. It will be used only for internal MIT Sloan purposes and will not be provided to a third party.

What are the application periods for each program?
We accept applications to the programs throughout the year, until the program reaches capacity at which point we will maintain a waitlist. You are welcome to apply at any time. (However, you should apply at least two weeks prior to the program start date to ensure you receive and have time to study any pre-reading materials.) There is no specific application period, but many of the courses fill up several months in advance, so we advise that you submit applications prior to that timeframe.

Please note: Participants traveling from other countries should also submit applications and payments well before the program dates so that we can provide you with the letter you will need in order to obtain your visa.

How long does it take to process my application?
It normally takes only 7 to 10 business days for the faculty committee to review your application.

When am I considered enrolled in a program?
You are enrolled in a program once you have applied, been accepted, and have paid in full. Enrollment in an Executive Certificate track alone does not enroll you in any programs. You still need to apply to the specific programs you have selected to fulfill your Executive Certificate track requirements.

When will I receive the program itinerary?
After you have been accepted by the faculty, the registrar will send you notification of your acceptance by e-mail. The details about the program will be sent along with this acceptance package. An acceptance package will include an invoice for the tuition fee, as well as hotel and other important information.

What is your admissions policy?
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology admits students of any race, color, sex, religion, or national or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the Institute. It does not discriminate against individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, or national or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, employment policies, scholarship and loan programs, and other Institute administered programs and activities, but may favor U.S. citizens or residents in admissions and financial aid. The Institute has adopted an affirmative action plan expressing its continuing commitment to the principle of equal opportunity in education.

What is your cancellation policy?
All cancellations must be made in writing. Send a note to the Registrar indicating that you wish to cancel your enrollment.  Cancellations fees are as follows:

  • 42 days or more prior to the program start date: $250 administrative fee
  • 41-22 days prior to the program start date:  50% cancellation fee
  • 21 days or less prior to the program start date: 100% cancellation fee

What if I need to postpone my enrollment?
All enrollment deferrals must be requested in writing. Send a note to the Registrar indicating that you wish to have your enrollment deferred to another session within one year.

Deferral fees are as follows:

  • 42 days or more prior to the program start date:  No fee
  • 41-22 days prior to the program start date: 25% fee
  • 21 days-1 day prior to the program start date: 50% fee
  • On or after the program start date: 100% fee

For all deferral requests, any balance remaining after the fee will be applied toward your tuition in the new session.

  • If you have paid in full: Your payment will be applied to the tuition in the new session, and you will not be charged any increase in tuition related to the new session.
  • If you have not paid in full: You will be billed for the remaining/outstanding tuition for the new session. Please note that there may be an increase in tuition for the new session.

If you choose to defer your admission to a future program session, you must attend that session or you will forfeit all funds previously paid. Only one deferral or substitution per registration is allowed and the new session must occur within one year of the original session date. There is no cancellation allowed on deferred admissions.

Can I send someone in my place?
If your schedule changes and you can no longer attend the program, you may be able to send a qualified colleague in your place. Only one substitution is allowed per program registration. All substitutes require prior approval from the program faculty. Therefore, any requests for substitutes must be submitted in writing to the Registrar at least 10 days prior to the start of the program. The new participant will also need to fill out an application form.

What if I have to miss a portion of the program?
In order to receive a program certificate of completion, you must attend the entire program. In addition, if you cannot attend the full program, you will not receive any Executive Certificate or ACE credit for the program. There will be no partial credit granted for any program that is not fully completed.  If you find that you cannot attend the full program for which you are registered, we advise to you defer your enrollment to the next session. Please see our Cancellation and Deferral policies for more information.

Can I get an official transcript of the programs I have completed?
Since our programs do not grant academic credit we are not able to offer official transcripts that are sealed and stamped. The document that we are able to provide is a .pdf letter confirming the courses completed and the dates. We do not provide notary services.

Are tests or grades given?
As our programs are non-academic, no exams are administered nor are grades conferred. We do not offer letter grades or a pass/fail designation. A certificate of completion is granted to each participant upon completion of each course. To qualify for an Executive Certificate, participants must complete four programs—three from their chosen track, along with one other program from any of the three tracks—within a four-year period.

Attire

What is the typical attire for an executive during a program?
For classes, “business casual” dress is customary. Business casual is defined as skirts/pants, open-necked shirts or blouses, and sweaters. The dress code is always informal after class and for dinner, unless otherwise announced. For dining out on Saturday or Sunday evenings, men may wish to bring a jacket and tie, and similarly appropriate attire for women, as some restaurants have a dress code. Participants who wish to participate in athletics should bring the appropriate attire.

Can I use the GI Bill to pay for MIT Sloan Executive Education courses?
VA benefits may be used to cover any educational experience that the VA approves, including some of our courses and certificates. To facilitate the enrollment of participants using VA benefits, we coordinate with the MIT Financial Aid office who assists us with submitting the necessary paperwork to the State Authorizing Authority for approval. To begin this process you should first create an account and register for the programs you would like to attend. Once you have been accepted, please email execed-registration@mit.edu and let us know that you will be using VA benefits. Please note that you will have to pay up front for the programs, as payment is due prior to the start of each course. The VA payment will be sent to us upon approval of your coursework, at which time we will refund the original payment to you. We cannot guarantee VA approval for any benefits as there are a number of factors involved in the VA’s decision including your personal eligibility status, the number students using benefits, and your maximum allowable benefit. Accordingly, you should allow for plenty of time to complete this process prior to the start of the program. If your enrollment in our program is not approved for VA benefits, you will still be responsible for the tuition and/or any cancellation and deferral fees.

What if I work for a government agency and need to pay after the program is completed?
Please contact the registrars directly regarding your payment. Each participant is responsible for ensuring that his or her invoice is paid. If there are specific government forms that need to be submitted, it is your responsibility to make sure that the forms are properly submitted and that your payment is processed in a timely manner.

Can I wire international payments?
Absolutely. If you provide the wiring agency with your invoice number and obtain the bank transfer reference number this will facilitate the payment process. If accepted into the program, your invoice will contain details on paying via wire transfer.

Can you invoice through my company's internal electronic procurement/purchase order system?
If your organization requires us to use your internal system, there will be a $1,000 (one-time) set up fee to your organization. In addition, there will be a $250 processing fee for each program enrollment. To avoid these fees, please follow our payment directions, which are included on each invoice and submit your credit card, check, or wire transfer payment promptly.

You will not earn MIT Sloan alumni status from completing an executive certificate from one of the three tracks: Management and LeadershipStrategy and InnovationTechnology, Operations, and Value Chain Management. However, participants that earn the Advanced Executive Certificate Program in Management, innovation & Technology (ACE) or complete the Advanced Management Program (AMP) program will benefit from inclusion in the MIT Sloan alumni directory, an MIT Sloan email-forwarding-for-life address, and a subscription to the MIT Sloan alumni enewsletter.

Will I receive academic credit?
No. Earning an Executive Certificate does not grant you academic credit.

Where can I see a list of programs I have completed? Where can I see how close I am to earning an Executive Certificate?
Please log into or create your account. Once you are logged in and on your profile page, you can see a list of the programs you have completed and how close you are to earning an Executive Certificate (see screen shot below.)

Where can I see sample Executive Certificate schedules and costs?
There are many different program combinations available when designing the Executive Certificate plan that is right for you. Here are just a few samples to get you started.

What does the Executive Certificate look like?
The Executive Certificate is signed by the Dean of the MIT Sloan School of Management and the Executive Director of MIT Sloan Executive Education. Click here to see a photograph of a sample certificate.

What are the requirements to earn an Executive Certificate?
The only requirements for the Executive Certificate are that you apply for, are accepted to, and complete three programs within your chosen track and one additional "elective" program (from any of the three tracks) within a four-year period.

How long will it take me to earn an Executive Certificate?
The Executive Certificate is designed to work with your schedule. The only requirement is that you complete four programs of any length within a 4-year period. Many recipients have earned their certificates in less than a year. It is even possible to earn an Executive Certificate within one two-week visit. See sample plans here.

I understand I have four years to complete four programs. At what point does the four years begin?
The four-year time frame begins with your first program start date. For example, if you attended your first program in June 2009, you must complete your fourth program by June 2013.

How do I enroll in the Executive Certificate program?
Use the Program Application/Certificate Enrollment form to enroll in the Executive Certificate program. You have the option to enroll in multiple tracks or indicate that you have not decided on a specific track. You also have the option of enrolling in an Executive Certificate track while you are completing a program application. (You must also apply for each of the individual programs you plan to attend.) You will be automatically awarded the appropriate certificate after completion of the required programs.

How much does an Executive Certificate cost?
The Executive Certificate is designed to meet your individual education needs. You attend four programs: three in your chosen track and one additional program, your “elective”. The total cost to you would be the costs of the individual programs you attend. We also offer a Multiple Program Discount: Individuals registering at one time for more than one program receive 15% off each “additional” program (e.g., If you are enrolling in three 2-day programs, the first program would be at the full price of $3,300, and the two additional programs would be at the discounted price of $2,805 each). All program registrations must be submitted via a single application form. See sample costs here.

Do I have to pay for all of the programs in an Executive Certificate plan in advance?
No, you pay on a per program basis. You have a four-year period to complete the four required programs. However, we also offer a Multiple Program Discount: Individuals registering at one time for more than one program receive 15% off each “additional” program (e.g., If you are enrolling in three two-day programs, the first program would be at the full price of $2,900, and the two additional programs would be at the discounted price of $2,465 each). All program registrations must be submitted via a single application form.

What if I need to miss a day or more of a program or leave early; will I still earn Executive Certificate credit?
In order to receive a program certificate of completion, you must attend the entire program. In addition, if you cannot attend the full program, you will not receive any Executive Certificate or ACE credit for the program. (Participants must attend the entire program in order to receive the certificate of completion and any credit towards an Executive Certificate.) If you find that you cannot attend the full program for which you are registered, we advise to you defer your enrollment to the next session. Please see our Cancellation and Deferral policies for more information.

When should I expect to receive my Executive Certificate?
In most cases, Executive Certificates will be awarded during the last required program of your chosen track. However, if you did not provide the same contact information when you applied for each of your qualifying programs, we will need to verify your information and the programs you have taken and will mail the Executive Certificate to you at a later date.

How do I receive a replacement Executive Certificate?
Please send us an email at execed-registration@mit.edu to request your replacement Executive Certificate. Please be aware that there are administrative costs plus shipping and handling fees.

Tracks and Eligible Programs

What Executive Certificate tracks are offered?

No. To qualify for each certificate, participants must complete three programs from their chosen trackalong with one other program from any of the three tracks:

You cannot take two programs from one track and two from another for example. Nor can you take two programs from one track and then one from each of the other tracks.

What programs are eligible?
All of the MIT Sloan Executive Education open enrollment programs are eligible for Executive Certificate credit. Select custom programs may be used as your "elective" program. Please contact us directly to see if your company's custom program qualifies for Executive Certificate credit.

Are your programs offered online?
We currently offer one online program. Big Data 4Dx a new, live, online offering of our popular Big Data program. Participants in this online session attend, in a virtual environment, the live session of Big Data being held on campus on October 16-16, 2013. The online program will feature the same faculty, content, discussions, and exercises used in the on-campus version.

I just recently decided to register for an Executive Certificate track, but I previously attended one of your programs. Would this program count toward my Executive Certificate requirements?
Yes, as long as you complete all four programs within a four-year period, programs taken prior to enrolling in a certificate track will qualify.

I attended an MIT Sloan custom program sponsored by my company. Would the custom program count toward an Executive Certificate?
Select custom programs may be used as your “elective” program. Please contact us directly to see if your company's program qualifies for Executive Certificate credit. If so, you must still complete three open enrollment programs from your chosen track.

Can I apply credit from courses I've taken at other universities or in other divisions of MIT toward an Executive Certificate?
No, credit from courses taken at other universities or in other divisions of MIT will not be applied to an Executive Certificate. Only MIT Sloan Executive Education programs qualify for Executive Certificate credit.

I completed an Executive Certificate and would like to pursue another one; can one of the programs I just finished count towards the other track, or toward ACE?
Yes, you may apply programs you have already taken toward another Executive Certificate or ACE. For example: You earned the Executive Certificate in Management and Leadership with three programs from that track and one elective from the Strategy and Innovation track. You now want to pursue the Executive Certificate in Strategy and Innovation. You may count the previously taken Strategy and Innovation program toward one of the three required Strategy and Innovation programs, and you may count one of the previously taken Management and Leadership programs as the Strategy and Innovation elective, provided all programs are still within the four year period. So, in this example, you would need to complete only two additional programs to earn the second Executive Certificate.

Advanced Certificate For Executives (ACE)

What is the Advanced Certificate for Executives (ACE)?
ACE is a new type of Executive Certificate for participants who complete 25 program days and attend at least two programs from each Executive Certificate track within a four-year period. ACE represents an extraordinary commitment to learning. It is comparable to a traditional advanced management program (AMP) in terms of cutting-edge content, access to today’s thought leaders, and excellent networking opportunities. However, the flexible, customizable format of ACE allows participants to design their own curriculum by choosing the programs that best fit their needs. Advanced Certificate for Executives (ACE) >>

Can my previously completed Executive Education programs count towards an Advanced Certificate for Executives (ACE)?

Custom Programs For Organizations

Does MIT offer custom programs for organizations?
Yes. Custom programs at MIT Sloan are a collaborative effort between MIT Sloan faculty and senior leaders of your firm. These educational engagements focus on advancing the strategic objectives of your firm, emphasizing application of theory in practice, and identifying effective action. More information on custom programs can be found here. You may also send an email to execed_custom@mit.edu.

Is an MIT Sloan Custom Program right for my organization?
If you answer "yes" to most of these questions, please contact us at execed_custom@mit.edu to discuss how we can work together.

  1. Is there a particular challenge you wish to solve? While each of our custom programs is built from the ground up with every new partner, our material is reflective of our faculty's expertise and areas of research. Knowing the specific challenge you wish to address will help us involve the right faculty right away and create program material based on the most current research relevant to your situation.
  2. Could this challenge be addressed efficiently in small teams? We integrate action learning projects into most of our programs. Could your situation be examined sufficiently during the five days our custom programs generally require?
  3. Do you have an idea of the time frame for the program? Our custom programs are led by MIT's most senior faculty, all of whom are world renowned researchers and widely sought after speakers and consultants. Having an approximate timetable will help us be more expeditious with your time and ours.
  4. Do you know a specific person in your organization who will serve as the executive sponsor? Each of our custom programs is a collaboration, requiring considerable commitment from both sides. In our experience with past and current corporate partners, we have found that dedicated senior-level leadership involvement throughout the program is essential to ensuring its success.
